Well, well, well ... Bureaucrats in Poland's "anti-immigrant" nationalist ruling party, the same one ostentatiously building walls on the border, are suspected of selling visas, and thus bringing more than 200,000 non-Europeans into Poland last year....

@anneapplebaum 🧐But Ukraine is so corrupt.😒
@anneapplebaum As a Hungarian this sounds somehow familiar.
@anneapplebaum Anti-immigrant sentiment has never been about numbers. It's about hierarchy: in the UK, Brexit is much less about actual reductions in immigrant numbers (Britain's are already as low as possible while keeping the economy functioning), but about being able to tell any immigrant who annoys a native "watch out or I'll call the Home Office."

@anneapplebaum @joaocosta Creating their own market- clever.

/s/ (should be obvs; but it’s the internet, after all)

@gorfram
Is it really /s/, though? If you need people to vote for you to solve a "problem", it can only benefit you if said "problem" gets worse... @anneapplebaum @joaocosta
@punissuer @gorfram @anneapplebaum @joaocosta well, not if the problem gets worse while you are in power, but then you can blame the "deep state"
@toriver
Obviously, once you actually fixed the problem, your aren't needed anymore and won't get elected again (as you have nothing else to offer). But if the problem gets worse while you're in power, that only indicates that you need *even more power*...
@gorfram @anneapplebaum @joaocosta
@anneapplebaum Sounds like a natural 2-fer: get more immigrants to increase your chances of obtaining / retaining power and pocket some cash to fund a corrupt lifestyle. A natural nationalist / fascist play.
@anneapplebaum create the problem, sell the solution

@anneapplebaum

From what I've read, it's even darker than we suspect.

In Hungary the fascist visa sales were to right-wing imports who tipped voting patterns in key contests giving Orban the edge.

A new form of global chess.

@anneapplebaum reminds me of that story about the Republican, railing about pedophiles etc, -getting cause molesting boys.
Right-wings shit heads should more scared of each other than anything they worry the world can come up with.
@anneapplebaum every accusation is a confession

@anneapplebaum

Wondering if Tim Mellon's Texas border wall serves the same purpose for the GOP; a source of graft & human trafficking.

Republicans want slavery back & the border wall provides a supply.

Aside from tax cuts for the rich, a trafficking law was one of Trump's few legislative "achievements".

ICE has always been very loyal to Trump's GOP. Why?

The GOP will take money from anybody, literally anybody.
