Can someone explain mcdonald's "as featured in" meal? - Lemmy.world

I was in the mood for a frozen coke and stopped at mcdonalds on my way home just now and I see the staff with these shirts and ads for “as featured in” meals with TV shows and movies, curious to see what it was and I looked it up and it appears it’s just regular meals with a packet of sweet and sour sauce with a loki ad… so what am I missing? How are the other shows/movies relevant? Is it really just a regular combo with a branded packet of regular sauce? Am I getting so old now that I can’t understand simple things?

They are saying they were in those movies or tv shows
So it’s not even like the main item was modified somehow? (like if a character had their burger with modified toppings)

Yeah, and it makes me just as annoyed as it seemingly does you. It’s just the same regular “number 3 combo” with a pic of the celebrity next to it.

At least the Grimace event had purple milkshakes, that’s different!

Yup. Just a marketing campaign
I’m pretty dang sure it’s a low-key loki season 2 ad
I see what you did there… but it’s no way subtle. I just expected there to be something different about these items besides sauce.
nah just double dipping on product placement

this is not a new marketin technique. nothing need to be changed for them to hype it as whatever the promotion is. they literally just need to slap an image on the side of the product.

this has been rampant only for the last oh, since they ever could.

I think they’re just trying to say how iconic they are as a brand because they’ve featured in so many bits of pop culture. It’s just a “we’re so cool, buy our stuff” campaign.
Basically this. Some of the items have a little list of pop culture films/TV that the company has showed up in.

McDonald’s has been experimenting with ads over the past few years where a celebrity promotes a specific meal, sometimes with a special sauce or other cheap ingredient that they can distribute for a limited time.

They have been relatively successful, since it doesn’t stress their supply chain and gets people to buy current menu items.
