Just read a post from someone I otherwise respect, attempting to reclaim for the Jimmy Buffet song Margaritaville - also a famous chain restaurant in shitty semi-tropical airports and casino towns - a deeper meaning.

Subjectively, the song sucks.

Objectively, I tend to sympathize more with the paradise-born people fighting for a chance to cook your cheeseburgers, than the gout-hovelled lech never too down and out to party in a "shit hole country"

Cry me a licensed tequila deal

Music is a beautiful, innate language that supersedes all others to speak directly. Im glad he, like anybody else, was able to develop and share his message. Feeling good is important.

..but what if Jimmy was Jacques and the US was a lesser power where you will NEVER afford a vacation (thus dont feel entitled to one)

..and the song was called "Poutine in Detroit" ?

How about "Duck Confit in 'Murica" ?

Im sad when our better advocates leave their blinders on for our guilty pleasures.

"Margaritaville" is why progressive Americans shit the bed w every chance to self assess and change - bc they cant accept we're 3 generations into a scenario that only works for a fraction of the planet

your nosalgia > their suffering

pondering the deeper meaning of a "lost shaker of salt" in a place where state-sponsored narco gangs routinely leave severed heads in ditches and street orphans sell pens to tourists??

..tourists just trying to have cheeseburgers in paradise...

PARADISE? Shame.

I just want to reiterate how arrogant, ignorant, and tacky this whole thing is.

Margaritaville is the longing for - and celebration of - a world that functions as a budget destination for even the lowliest US chump to live like a king, get wasted, bang some ethnic broads until you overstay your welcome (run out of money)

Margaritaville is the anthem of doe-eyed american entitlement, wasteful hubris, shallow self-reflection and lame, no-rhythm-having expat barfly binge drinking self-pity

Shame
