I understand why they gamify it but it ends up being completely counterproductive (at least for me) because instead of taking the time to understand what it is I’m learning I just cane through as many lessons as I can, then cheat by doing legendaries in languages I already know, for the XP. 🙄
These people, how are they getting these scores? Seriously? It’s 10 XP per basic lesson. Are they seriously doing 3,000 lessons in a week? #Duolingo

@Chaosbender Even if you saved up all your legendaries to do in one week, and spent money on XP boosts, so you get 80 for each one, that’s still 70 legendary lessons every day for a week. That doesn’t seem very likely.
Łukasz Michał właśnie wrócił@ottocrat @Chaosbender You can get up to 120xp (using a boost) in something 90 seconds when the league challenge is match madness. Assuming constant supply of boosters, that’s already over four thousand per hour. Not a great way to learn a language, though.

It’s worse than that. Numnutz coders who view Duolingo as a competition to be won, rather than an aid to learning, have programmed automated bots whose purpose is solely to “earn” XP as fast as possible.

embix@lukaszmichal @ottocrat @Chaosbender if you pay for super, personalized speech practice in combination with xp boosters can get you in the same region (only if you answer immediately without waiting for the suggested pronunciation to finish, then 40xp in 30s are possible, if you do it properly without xp boosters it’s more like 20xp in 60s)
jvqn@ottocrat Duo has been bad in recent months and even more so this week. I try to get into less stressful leagues by doing the first lesson of the week on Tuesday. Still, doesn't always work.
If you maximize daily boosters and buy super you can get 90XP per (legendary) lesson. But >20k is still insane. Can't imagine how you get that without cheating.

Craig Grannell@ottocrat Yep. I bought a year of family. But I’m going to soon check out Memrise and see if that’s a better fit. Duolingo just isn’t working well. At the very least, I need to drop and ignore the league stuff entirely.
@craiggrannell I’m definitely making progress but there are major gaps. At the very least I need to find someone who will give me some conversational practice.
