Listening to the band Said the Whale's older material today, I rediscovered this song, and was reminded that catastrophic #wildfires have been causing climate anxiety for western Canadians for longer than I appreciated. Last Tree Standing is from 2009.

Said the Whale- Last Tree Standing

YouTube

In the summer of 2003, I lived in Nelson, in interior B.C. It was a smoke-saturated summer, fed by drought. A carelessly tossed cigarette butt led to one of the most destructive fires in the province's memory (at the time) in Barriere. the charred stands are visible from the highway as you approach Kamloops from the north, coming from Jasper.

Yet, the scale of destruction in Barriere is a fraction of what some this summer's wildfires are causing.
