I hope everyone is having a great weekend!

This is my periodic reminder to support your instance - nearly all instances are free and rely on donations to pay the bills. I very much appreciate donations to Infosec.exchange, and I know that some other instances may be struggling financially. If you are in a position to donate to your instance, especially for those people on other instances, please consider donating. You can usually find the link to donate to your instance on the instance’s about page (such as Infosec.exchange/about).

My thanks to everyone who does support their instance. And there is zero problems (for me at least) with those that can’t afford it. These are tough times for many, and I think it’s vitally important to provide a reliable and useful social network outlet that is available to everyone.

Thank you!

I feel like I should clarify. I am mainly asking for people on other instances to support their instance. I love love love the donors to Infosec.exchange and didn’t mean this to come across as a beg post - the health of the fediverse relies on a diverse network of instances. I want to make sure that other instances are able to cover their costs as well.

@jerry

Do we have any metrics about the average cost per active user? It might be nice to publish the average contribution necessary to meet costs.

@larthallor I think it is different for each instance. On Infosec.exchange, it’s about $0.15 US per active user per month, but only about 2% of people donate. At that rate, it’s about $6 per month to cover costs

@jerry Shockingly low costs, but also shockingly low participation rate. Thanks!

Mastodon.social has too large of a gap between their $1/month tier and $8 tier. The sweet spot for me is somewhere between $3 and $5, but I’d go to $6 if that’s what it takes to keep the lights on.

@larthallor yeah, for us, the costs are just hosting and related charges. All the upkeep and whatnot is volunteer labor.
