OTD, Aug 28, 1955, white supremacists kidnapped, tortured, & murdered 14-year-old Emmett Till. Carolyn Bryant—the woman who knowingly falsely accused him—just passed. The warrant for her arrest ignored, she lived free.

Emmett isn't ancient history—he's contemporary reality.

@QasimRashid My mother was pregnant with me the summer he was murdered. Her parents hailed from Duck Hill, MS. If she ever thought of having her kids visit relatives--many Black parents in Northern States sent their children South to visit relatives when school let out for the summer--Till's death quashed that.

@QasimRashid

"Just" is relative, I suppose...

She died April 25th, 2023.

Carolyn Bryant Donham Dies at 88; Her Words Doomed Emmett Till

She accused Emmett, 14, of accosting her, and her testimony led to the acquittals of her husband and his half brother in a murder that helped galvanize the civil rights movement.

@MaryPot please don’t respond like this when racism is being called out. The point is, in comparison to the 68 years Emmett Till hasn’t been on this earth because of her racist lie, she just passed

@inarticulatequilter

I read several similar articles when she died. He's by far the first to point out how many have literally gotten away with murder, including much more current cases.

@QasimRashid

Biden’s decision to honor Emmett Till and Mamie Till-Mobley with a national monument will be one of the most consequential legacies of his presidency.

For those who can get to Washington, DC, the Emmett Till exhibit at the National Museum of African-American History and Culture is something extraordinary that will change those who see it.

The Till memorial marker in Miss. has been shot at and subsequently replaced four times in “post-racial” America.

Emmett Till Memorial Has a New Sign. This Time, It’s Bulletproof.

The sign, which is the fourth to replace others that were vandalized, is made of steel and weighs 500 pounds.

@QasimRashid. And #PercivalEverett has written a magnificent book about #EmmettTill. If you haven't read it, I recommend you run to the bookstore and get it. It's called #TheTrees.
