@BEK97 @Phreba Tottenham are the Jets of the EPL. I avoided them when I picked a team precisely bc I already have one Jets in my life.

@chopaganda @Phreba well when you put it that way...

What is your Arsenal-US sports team comp?

@BEK97 @Phreba Ravens or post-70s Steelers. Almost always a contender. Rarely a juggernaut. Values stability and doing things the right way. More focused on long term investments in growing talent vs flashy free agency.
@chopaganda @BEK97 they’ve won a ton. Arsenal has won the most FA Cups of any team. Only thing they haven’t accomplished is the Champion’s League. If they’re not the Yankees then they’re the cardinals. Don’t let them fool you.

@Phreba @BEK97 FA Cups are a third tier trophy.

Having not won the CL is like saying “they are like the Yankees only if the Yankees never won a World Series.

@chopaganda @Phreba @BEK97 my two cents is that there is still a hefty debate on an EPL title (best league in the world) vs a CL trophy (has become more prestigious than a domestic cup?) I actually still value the former more. Also, the newness of the CL in relative terms, in and of itself muddies up the water.

@phewstepsaway @Phreba @BEK97 My point still stands though. If you’re gonna be the Yankees of soccer, you can’t be known as a historically frugal team who never won one of the two biggest trophies.

Bayern, Barca, Madrid, Shitty, Chelsea, and United are the only clubs in the world where the Yankees comparison works.

@chopaganda @phewstepsaway @Phreba I see I prodded some rivalries. Who knew EPL fans were more defensive than Phish fans?;)
@BEK97 @phewstepsaway @Phreba You have no idea. It gets ugly.
@chopaganda @BEK97 @phewstepsaway all fair points about the Yankees comparison. My overriding sentiment is as a Met fan, Yankees were/are big brother in NYC. Arsenal is certainly big brother to Tottenham in north London, that’s primarily driving this. But yes, over the last 20 yrs, arsenal is a shadow of its former self, hung on to Wenger about 5 yrs or so too long and big spenders came in; City, Chelsea, and now Newcastle(oil).
@BEK97 @chopaganda @phewstepsaway English football rules, it’s really nice that we can even discuss this. 15 -20 yrs ago, I barely knew anyone I could talk EPL with and I just love how it’s grown.
@chopaganda @BEK97 not historically, don’t say that in England. It’s a huge deal. Those other bullshit cups, Caribao etc are meaningless. But, prior to champions league being a thing, there was nothing bigger.
