@petergleick France and other European countries have plenty of abandoned rail lines too. The high speed lines connect only the larger cities. Most of the countryside has to make do with very little public transport.
@wisze@petergleick Yes. In France, plenty of old railways disappeared even before the 50s . What we have now is a portion of the network we used to have.
@fxtoledo@petergleick On the plus side, many of those old tracks are converted into cycle paths. Paths like those of the Belgian Ravel network (photo) lead you through the beautiful countryside. Because those tracks were built for rail the slopes are very gentle too.
