Can some ELI5 (Or, more accurately, ELI 30 something idiot) how this impacts the US for me? I get the basics of “big tech change in eu, will likely impact US to some degree” but I don’t really understand how those changes work here. Like, no targeted ads for being gay in the eu. Would Google still be able to target me, a gay man in the US specifically on that criteria?

Depends on how the companies react. Good companies would have the same options available to everyone, middle ground ones only to European users and the shittiest continue as is but say otherwise or just pay the fines.

So users in the USA will probably continue getting fucked.

If it is at all profitable, from an advertiser stand point, to continue hyper-targeting advertisements to Americans(or any other country across the globe not covered by regulation) they will do it.

They have an obligation to their shareholders to fuck over users/costumers as much as possible.
