Canada: 14 whales have died at aquarium since 2019, exposé reveals - Lemmy.world

This is the best summary I could come up with:

Canadian Press published its revelations on Thursday after receiving documents through access to information requests.

Marineland, which opened in 1961, is also home to land animals including bears, bison, elk and deer, according to its website.

Earlier this year, the province charged Marineland over failing to provide adequate enclosures and water access to its three black bears.

The former Marineland employee and whistleblower Phil Demers spent a decade trying to free Smooshi, a walrus he had previously trained and had since plotted to steal because of concerns over her health and safety.

“We have a strong record of providing for the welfare of our animals and will continue to prioritize their health and wellbeing as a central focus of our mission,” reads a website post signed by Marie Holer, who took over the park after her husband and Marineland’s founder died in 2018.

Wayne Gates, a member of provincial parliament in Niagara Falls, told the Canadian Press the time has come to repurpose Marineland.

OMG! This is horrible. Just kore proof these poor animals dont deserve to be locked up their whole lives ☹️
The funny thing is that many humans more or less willingly live life's like that.
Reconsidering my choice to live inside a walled glass enclosure, only able to eat fish which are thrown in to me, constantly being watched by gawping spectators.
Damn I sound really stupid now. Deservedly so though, that's Im14andthisisdeep territory and deserves all the mocking.
A similar life would be a human living in a 6x6 solitary confinement cell, which nobody chooses voluntarily.
I would tend to agree, and in the case of places that are strictly amusements parks, I totally agree. However, there are very good organizations out there, that are helping animals that can’t live in the wild, because of injury, being some assholes “pet” until it became too much to deal with, or saving species from asshole humans killing them to near extinction levels. Unfortunately, that means those animals have to live in captivity. It’s not just a simple ban all captive animals thing.
Wild animals that cannot survive should be euthanized, not rehabilitated into prison.
That’s your opinion. Not everyone agrees with you.

Marine Land is one of the worst theme parks there is. They profit from animal suffering. They’ve been on business as far back as I can remember. The ads used to run constantly on TV, sometimes twice per advertisement segments during a show.

The owner is a fucking sleaze bag too. He couldn’t care less about these animals.

I watched a video a while back about how weird the park is, I think it should be this one

Well he sounds dead from the article

The former Marineland employee and whistleblower Phil Demers spent a decade trying to free Smooshi, a walrus he had previously trained and had since plotted to steal because of concerns over her health and safety.

This past spring, Smooshi and her calf Koyuk were relocated to SeaWorld in Abu Dhabi.

Poor Smooshi :(

No matter how big the enclosure it’s never big enough for these wild animals because they’re wild fucking animals not domesticated house pets.
That… seems like a lot.

Look how we saving all this animals in there cages and tanks. With all this cool Aquaparks and Zoos and whatever.

Bullshit industry

Seems like the whales have a better chance being dumped in the ocean than staying in their fish tanks

Not really. That’s the sad part. They seemingly have a death sentence either way. They’ve tried to rehabilitate captive whales multiple times and it’s not been successful. If you dumped them in the wild they would essentially just starve to death.

Just evil, the whole situation.

I read the headline and with a grim sigh thought "good hopefully this whole thing will be shut down sooner." It's evil and wrong. It's like keeping a human in a broom closet.
