YouTube may face billions in fines if FTC confirms child privacy violations - Lemmy.world

How great would it be if YouTube died?
We’d need Odysee or PeerTube to be a serious competitor people could switch to first.
No user hosted video platform can succeed unless the hoster gets massive amounts of donations. The storage costs alone would be astronomical, but the real kicker would be the power bill. Transcoding to numerous people at different qualities requires tons of power.

The technical challenge alone would be difficult to tackle, but it doesn’t solve problems with a viable business model.

Consumers expect production quality that only can be archived with full-time content creators, which is only possible with revenue sharing. Combined with the massive operation costs, you are going to need a substantial amount of ads.

YouTube with targeted ads has only recently been able to run net positive, a less aggressive business model probably isn’t going to be profitable, at least not as a fully free to use platform.

Why does it need to be profitable? An open source solution developed by volunteers only needs to sustain itself.
Not very for a lot of content creators.
There’s no reason to suppose whatever replaced it would be worse. It’s not happening either way.
There’s also no reason to suppose the replacement would be better.
It would be terrible if you want to be serious about it. There is a ton of great information that would be lost if it happened.
The knowledge lost would be devastating. I hope they are simply forced to change their business model.
