Instrumentalism, whether progressive or bureaucratic, spells the death of enchantment, and the latter’s coarse business model of culture can easily accommodate the former’s narcissistic sensitivities.
—Patrick Curry, Art and Enchantment: How Wonder Works #instrumentalism
@jan you know this quote just made me realise something. In Higher Education everything is constructive alignment and Bloom's taxonomy (insert loud eyeroll here) and I couldn't figure out why I have for over 20 years such a vsiceral reaction against both concepts.
Fundamentally these remove enchantment from learning, they instrumentalise the process into a linear articifically parceled thing. That doesn't allow for the unknown, unpredicted, serendipitous which imo are at the core of learning
@drntasler Yes, “instrumentalise the process into a linear articifically parceled thing” and you remove enchantment (and kill aliveness).

@jan I was never able to clearly phrase my aversion until now. So thank you for a Wednesday morning A-ha moment.

Now what to do about it?
