I'm disgusted with this article listing Jester's walled garden Mastodon server as the top alternative to twitter. For crying out loud. And it makes me mad that my #miltwitter community mostly got hornswoggled by the Jester when they were looking to move from twitter and now I have lost that community because it's walled itself off. @wa7iut People I knew who were signing up for CS had no idea what Mastodon was and had never been on it. They didn't realize that what Jester was selling was a Mastodon instance that would wall them off. When it came to Mastodon, they felt it was too confusing to pick a server. They just felt it was confusing overall. Basically they hired Jester to be their babysitter. 👎

I signed up briefly when a few of the MilTwitter folks insisted he wasn't going to be a big part of the discourse but the level of deity worship around there was giving me such creepy cult vibes I left. Now that I'm on Masto that makes sense. Wow.

@Nonya_Bidniss @wa7iut I know military people tend to have a big follower mentality, but their ability to forget the awful things people have done when it becomes cool to be associated with them again just boggles my mind. I'm surprised they haven't enshrined his precious laptop at the Spy Museum by now. 😆 I've lost most of the friends I had from that community by now cause their follower count and engagement on X mean more to them than doing the right thing. It makes me sad.

@SaruNinjaDesu @wa7iut Yeah, at this point I really have lost respect for people who are fine with still being there (either place, I guess!) But most respect lost for those on twitter ignoring what's been happening...I moved for principle last year and lost engagement with hundreds of mutuals. Oh well, principle is worth it.

It's too bad. Some used to worry about the mil-civil divide, but this won't help. A better solution would have been to set up some trusted Mastodon servers run by known folks. It won't surprise me if Jester turns out to be some stolen valor poser.

@wa7iut My understanding is he was, at least 10 years ago or so, in the USAF at a low level. I can't verify that. But he was just some average bonehead.

@wa7iut Yup. It seems it's just for the paying idiots at first. But why stop there? Facebook pulled that trick on everybody and sort of randomly when it started verification.
