Eris, BA.2.86: Do I need to worry about COVID again?

The World Health Organization and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are tracking a new, highly mutated lineage of the virus that causes COVID-19.

@erictopol you think we will need another booster shot soon? It seems like it has fallen off the public’s mind.
@Onmyom @erictopol I recently asked my Nurse Practitioner and she said there will be an new one in September that offers broader protection. If you go to get one, ask how long the one they offer has been around. If more than a month, wait, in case the new one is delayed.
@michaelslade @erictopol good idea. I have had all my shots and boosters (but need to worry about them as I have a preexisting condition and want to travel.)

@edsuom @erictopol

This.

Most people equate the fact that they probably are not going to die straight away or be hospitalized and get a tube shoved up their throat any longer (due to vaccines) with the situation that the virus is now completely harmless to them and equal to a common cold. Which is....peak ignorance at best.

@erictopol "Due to the waning of the pandemic, it may have been a year or more since many people were either previously infected or vaccinated against COVID." How about, due to the simple fact that a vaccine is not currently available to most of us? I sure as heck would have had a recent booster going simultaneously into a rising covid wave and the fall semester... if I could get one!
@erictopol Thank you for your work, Mr. Topol.
