I cannot put into words how much I despise video tutorials for... actually, pretty much anything really. Please just use text like a normal person so that I can ctrl-F for the bit I need
@djnavarro I also hate video tutorials. I know it’s a generational thing, and maybe I’m just getting old, but I’ve noticed that my students are increasingly reluctant to read anything at all, and prefer to watch short videos instead. It’s worrying because they don’t get enough information or nuance from videos, and can’t engage with them in the same way as with a book or article.
@djnavarro @louisepryor You try to teach guitar playing with text.
I am very much a better player now because of video tutorials
@hanscees @djnavarro @louisepryor
A small subset of guitar videos represent a tiny exception to an otherwise solid rule suggested by Danielle.

@djnavarro

An example:

Last year, I had to replace the battery in my lawn mower.

The correct battery no longer made (!), so I had to assemble a replacement from individual cells.

Yes, there were videos galore. Yes, they helped. Yes, they were really annoying because there was no easy way to summarize their content.

So I made my own text(-ish) tutorial, with pictures of the battery surgery in progress:

My Brief But Spectacular Career as a Lawnmower Battery Surgeon

My lawnmower needed a new battery, but they’re no longer made. So I made one of my own.

@djnavarro OH MY GOD YES YES YES I thought I was the only one
@deboraha It's so frustrating. For anything I personally care about there's usually something decent in writing, so it doesn't bother me. But anytime I need to help the kids with one of their things it's nothing but wall to wall YouTube videos and I fucking hate every goddamn shitty low-resolution low-bitrate second of it
@djnavarro for me it’s whenever we need to fix something around the house (dishwasher, oven, car etc). Argggh it is torture (and by the way this just makes us all appreciate your carefully crafted blog posts about things we might want to know even more)

@deboraha ❤️ ❤️ ❤️

There was a time a while back when I was seriously considering making videos too, because it was a requirement of the job, but now that it's no longer my job to be an educator I find myself with absolutely no interest whatsoever in making or watching video tutorials

@djnavarro the only thing I’ve seriously thought about doing videos of is Instructions for Participants. I do think that might be a useful idea (not mine, my PhD student).
@djnavarro but how will they clear their $17.43/year from #YouTube?
@djnavarro even worse because YouTube nudges videos to be long
@djnavarro I agrre if they are longer and doesnt contain chapters, itherwise I like vid for the more personal feeling :)
@djnavarro There are some things where I want a video like if I'm taking something apart but even then I'd prefer there be a companion video to written instructions with pictures
@djnavarro I just bought a lawn trimmer and instead of assembly instructions it had a QR link to a video
@djnavarro this shits been the worst for ARPG character builds like buddy I want to know the basics of where to put skillponts here this doesn't need a 90 minute video it needs a writeup I can scroll through in three swipes of the mousewheel tops
@djnavarro almost always agree, definitely for tech stuff, but not for bow ties. Needed videos for bowties.
@jaredlander @djnavarro I can’t figure out if the abuse of video content is supply driven or demand driven. I’m making some technical videos for work and it’s much more work than writing. At least by my standards.
@Cmastication @djnavarro I do thiink some people love them. My dad, who is not technically savvy, figures out everything through video tutorials. Even things like how to create a bookmark. But also things like changing the battery in a key fob.
@Cmastication @jaredlander @djnavarro I've also found the little bit of video I've done to be much more work. I think partly supply driven, because you can see how many views other people's videos get but not how many views R4DS has had, for example
@djnavarro So so true! I abhor them, I’m forced to use video blockers when I search for tutorials or guides nowadays, so it becomes a tad bit easier to navigate to the most useful link.
