still can't believe LTT tried to get away with MONETIZING their FUCKING APOLOGY VIDEO
"one of our employees may have been sexually abused, but you know who WON'T sexually abuse you? our sponsor, expressVPN! expressVPN is the leading VPN for data privacy and and is essential for staying anonymous..."
@mjdxp posts that make me do a spit take
@mjdxp wha…what!? Oh my…

@mjdxp The warranty bullshit from a year or two ago was just the early warning sign apparently. TL;DR for those who aren't familiar, they put out some terrible warranty terms, community complained, they responded by saying literally "trust me bro" and made tshirts making fun of the controversy.

Reading through Madison/suuuoppp's thread made me angry about the entire thing. Then seeing the staff meeting video about inappropriate behaviour the day after she quit where the head of their writing department finishes the meeting by asking if someone is gonna table dance was just like, wtf.

Monetizing the apology video was just the level of scum you might expect after that.

They also apparently stopped their streaming service (floatplane) subscriber number from live-updating. It apparently halved in response to this bullshit and that was when it was only their shitty ethics and the sexual harassment stuff hadn't come to light.

the one thing i liked about that video is how everyone talked about linus in the most condescending way, as if he was a five year old who shattered a plate
@mjdxp It's all grift with those people. I swear, almost everyone in tech outside of retrocomputing seems to be a grifter these days.
@mos_8502 i know, it's jarring seeing big tech companies screwing over millions of people in egregious ways at the same time as indie projects like the commander X16 are being made with no profit motive
@mjdxp Profit motive isn't a problem in and of itself, but I do know for a fact that most of the people involved in that project are doing something they care about, even if I disagree strongly with a lot of their choices.
@mjdxp we're sorry (ltt store dot com)
@gsuberland not only did they name drop their merch store, they actually name dropped some upcoming product, the absolute balls
@mjdxp "we take these issues very seriously. just as seriously as the look and feel of our new noctua screwdriver"

@mjdxp I personally think most of the GN criticism was pretty milquetoast aside from the Billet Labs thing, but jfc LTT did not read the room with that video. so tonedeaf.

(the situation with Madison is a whoooooole separate shitstorm, though)

@mjdxp no, it's extremely on brand
@dan for me it's an "our expectations were low but holy fuck" moment
@mjdxp I mean at this point, I'm almost surprised there wasn't a ukelele involved
@mjdxp thing is the majority of people either won't notice or won't care. LTT will continue to rake in that sweet, dirty YT money
@mjdxp They wouldn’t make it if they didn’t think it would make them money… Just another for profit corporation, wish I could say I was more surprised but… They’ve been headed this direction for a bit now
@alfredohno i mean they've made 4 billion dollars this year alone so i think it's working
@k Right, again, they wouldn’t do it otherwise
@[email protected] Linus Voice: I just want to say I'm sorry, but not as sorry as you're going to be if you miss out on this message from our sponsor
