It's not that Americans themselves are getting more fascist, more hateful. If anything, Americans are becoming more tolerant.

It's that a small set of extremely rich people is getting bolder about funding extremism, bolder about supporting coups, bolder about buying courts.

@alexwild There's no quicker way to turn a middle-class liberal into one willing to accept or promote fascism than by turning them into a poor person and telling them it was the liberals' fault

They'll do anything to get over the shame of falling out of their rightful role in society, including throwing the scapegoats into the gas ovens
