How do you keep your marketing automation from becoming a stage 5 clinger and a turn off for customers?

The amount of emails that start with "did you find something you like" is getting ridiculous.
Even Yelp now emails follow ups about any restaurant you simply viewed on their site just to ask if you actually went there. It feels creepy.

Are people measuring if all of this is really effective or is everyone just doing all the things their tools allow just because they can? #marketing
