I was just able to finish the episode & had to share a laugh from the ~30m mark. "Being vulnerable at all costs." I've had to implement that same try/except pattern before in a production web api. The reason being that the business cost of requiring mobile users to update in order to make purchases was deemed unacceptable. It's neither the first or last time that a glaring security hole will take a backseat to client functionality & compatibility.
