When the music stops: how the Taliban’s fear of art is killing Afghan culture

Musicians and artists are living in a state of terror. Can the country’s identity as a ‘crossroads of cultures’ survive a policy of strict repression?

@magdelenehall You know, I expect that gut-wrench and anger with reports on the wretched torment the Afghan people have been subjected to.
What I didn’t expect when I started reading this was a different kind of despair. Arts have such great power to enable, empower and drive change. I cannot imagine bearing the pain from losing music. It may also be why a human voice remains the perfect instrument, for all the beauty of man-made ones.
A difficult but important read — thank you.
