I'm planning to go to #SIGDIAL2023 #INLG2023 by train rather than plane, because it's truly astonishing how much worse for the planet it is for us to fly when we can travel over land instead: https://ourworldindata.org/travel-carbon-footprint

We really need a world that's willing to move at a slower pace, taking more time to get places, or we're not going to have a world one day. I'd love to see employers explicitly prioritizing rail travel and national rail services in Europe coordinating to simplify end-to-end bookings

Which form of transport has the smallest carbon footprint?

How can individuals reduce their emissions from transport?

@_dmh Interrail could be cheaper than ordinary tickets. You still have to pay 30 Euros for Eurostar reservation and seats are limited but you can check in advance whether Interrail reservations are available for when you want to go.

Not sure if the uni would book interrail for me, but I'll look into that, thanks!

@_dmh When I went to the UK in June I did Eurostar one way and ferry to Hoek van Holland in the other - if you end up going via the Netherlands, a ferry to Hull or Newcastle could make sense but I have no idea what the university would think of that!
