Synth.NyqiIs playing VRChat on desktop even worth it? Cause I never really could get into it, even tho I always end up making my own avatar and then barely playing it.

@PaweZ1 It's worth it- under certain conditions. Mostly, if you're using it to hang out with existing friends and VR is unavailable. It's not really worth it to use it on desktop as a single-player thing or to use it alone to make friends. Even as a VR player, it's rare to meet someone in-game that you'll be good friends with. Public worlds are hit-and-miss, usually leaning towards miss. I'd say make friends elsewhere, and use VRChat as a place to get together.
@Vyath I just never could like walk up to people and talk to them, always found it weird. Maybe it would be better if one has VR and a lacks weird variation of social anxiety.
Besides, there is not really much to do besides like chatting and stuff, and while the game is called VRChat for a reason, still
@PaweZ1 don't worry, you're not alone. I see posts almost daily on VRChat reddit about people dealing with social anxiety. That's why I specified existing friends. There's lots to do besides just chatting, but part of that depends on having someone who knows where those cool things are. Games and activities, etc. One potential way to get your voice out if you do want to go in a public lobby is to visit a karaoke room. There's a really great furry karaoke world I regularly participate in. Then you have a time when it's your turn to use your voice, and it can help break the ice.
JoeyJRoo@Vyath @PaweZ1 I think I spent the first handful of times just loading into avatar worlds solo, trying out new avatars and seeing what animations were in them. Over time I'd dip into more public worlds. Sometimes you might come across a friendly person who'd welcome you into a chat. Take as small a step as feels right. It's a wonderful game, even on desktop. World exploration is incredible too, if you're not up for trying chatting for the day. Tons of really wonderfully created places to see.

As for the games and activities, some of the more manual games would kinda suck if you do not have access to hand tracking, just using your mouse to move an item in three dimensions sucks enough in VRChat.

@PaweZ1 @JoeyJRoo VRChat is the ultimate "I know a place" kind of thing. There's just so much content, both good and mediocre, that it's hard to find just the good stuff. And what's popular isn't always good. For me, I discover a lot of the most beautiful worlds on Twitter by following VRChat photographers like Bradlee1011, Neomance, and ExploreVRChat. The last one has a discord server ( discord.gg/XANAGXEJpn ) but the first two don't post outside of Twitter yet. I use one of my worlds playlists as a "to visit" list, and add worlds to it from the web browser when these creators post something I think looks cool.
@PaweZ1 @JoeyJRoo In terms of games, I've seen most of my favorite games make sure that they take desktop users into account to make sure it's playable and fun there too. Dead Men Walking is a great zombie shooter that is possible but challenging solo, more fun with friends. Lightcycle Arena has good desktop controls. (I recommend playing with at least 4 people total- might need to do a public instance). Khyaber's Mini Golf Madness says it's desktop compatible, though I haven't tried it myself in desktop mode. And that's not all there is.
@Vyath @JoeyJRoo Sounds fun, could try them out tho it would be best to try them first with a friend and then slowly introduce more and more people.
I've also heard just complimenting people's avatars is a good thing to do, granted of course that they made their avatar themselves.
Still, discussing about avatars and such could be fun, cause I could relate to it.
@PaweZ1 @Vyath That's almost always a great convo starter. Just saying "Your avatar looks great!" is a good way to see if the other is keen to talk about it. The good news is you're already playing the same game, and shared interests helps kick-start a chat. Some avatars are just....incredible. Not everyone you'll meet will be as keen to, and that's fine.
