[ COMMUNITY UPDATE ] - A Note on piracy and Lemmy.world's decision to ban piracy communities - 2023-08-14 - Lemmy

As you may know, Lemmy.world has decided to ban any communities that deal with the subjects of piracy. Considering that this sub might be considered piracy-adjacent, I’d like to make it clear that discussing the subject directly is not allowed, nor is requesting/offering Plex shares in posts or comments. This is a community for discussing Plex products, serivices, add-ons, etc. and getting adivce and support or those apps/services. It’s not a place to discuss piracy. I understant this is a fine line to walk and requires a certain amout of compartmentaliation in our discussions, but it’s what keeps our discussions from becomaing legally problematic (depending on your jusridiction) or our instnace hosts and keeps our community federated with and visible to as many users as possible! Fucking stupid decisions from lemmy world admins, time to make an account elsewhere it seems. Might just go to dbzeros instance
eh… lemmy.world is based in the US, so they’re liable for anything that gets federated there, as that stuff is not technically hosted on their servers. it’s not because they object to it, it’s just protecting themselves.
If it was any other regular website like reddit it would just get completely shut down. Like others have said, this is the strength of federation.
