The idea of speedrunning games with impeccable writing continues to be amusing to me, I don't know why. There's something about making a deliberate effort to see as little of a game I loved as possible that I find very funny.

Anyway, I've started doing some work on Kentucky Route Zero. Should be able to start serious Act I attempts today.

they heard me. the first KRZ patch after launch is out today. this game came out 3 and a half years ago.
@ratamero it's been on my steam wishlist about that long. Very intrigued by it and story driven games in general.
@dn_mason I cannot say enough good things about it!
@ratamero I'm still trying to get over the emotional wrench of #FireWatch TBH
@ratamero "Fixes that one skip ratamero just found"
@prof well would you believe it the patch breaks my method for fast-advancing dialogue

@ratamero think you can reach out to the devs for confirmation that your speedrun was indeed a catalyst for the patch?

Universal Paperclips was patched twice explicitly to fix/balance exploits that speedrunners, including myself, discussed with Frank Lantz, the creator. The game is ultimately faster now, but it was definitely an interesting dynamic.

@superhiero this is a pretty substantial patch with a whole new interface for the game, I doubt they sat on it for 3 and a half years waiting for someone to try speedrunning it! just "bad" timing. I'm running a downpatched version anyway to keep parity with what I've already done (and because it's faster)

@ratamero LOL reminds me of this classic line from what I consider one of the best papers ever written:

“This suggested to me that it may be time to automate the playing of NES games, in order to save time.”

From “The First Level of Super Mario Bros. is Easy with Lexicographic Orderings and Time Travel” by Tom Murphy.
