[AskEurope] Europeans, what is your favorite country of Europe other than your own? - tchncs

For me it’s Italy.

Just the food would be enough, but then there is the weather, the charm of the cities and small towns, the culture… Can’t wait to go back.

from where are you from?
I currently live in Spain!
… But where are you from?

To be honest, it’s not that easy to answer. My parents are from country A, I grew up partly in country B and then country C, I worked in country D, and now I live in Spain.

Also, giving all of these countries makes it quite easy to doxx me, so I usually avoid that.

And how much money do you have in your bank account?
I wouldn’t say the weather in summer…
Czechia. Lived there for a couple of years for no real reason at all loved it.
I still have to go, I did Budapest and Vienna, I heard Prague is beautiful too
Make sure to drop by Bratislava if you are doing the loop! It is often overlooked, but worth the trip
Especially the East.
Can confirm. I lived in Brno.
My dad and I stayed with friends in Ostrava for 3 weeks and did day trips to different places. Definitely want to go back, especially want to visit Stramberk again.
As a Czech I’d have to say Slovakia, of course 🌲
As a Slovak, i have to say Czechia of course 🥹🫡
As in Italian I loved Spain so much
Funny, I now live in Spain and love Italy ha ha
I regularly say how nice France would be if it wasn’t full of French people 😂
(from Spain) Id have to say Denmark (Copenhagen specifically), just so great a city, people.
Finland. Definitely the most beautiful country in Europe I have ever visited. Warm summers and freezing cold winters. People that accept “hermits” like me. I might have been a Finn in a former live. Also so many lakes. Only downside: mosquitoes, these vile creatures own half of the country.
As a Dane I would say Italy.
is good for a vacation, but do not move down here…
Why not? If I had to, I would probably choose the Italian alps.
well, that’s a good part of italy. but generally, pays are too low, and the cost of living is high. not a good combination
Norway, so many beautiful fjords and mountains!

German, gotta go with Netherlands.

Love that we speak a bastardized version of each others languages, which allows us to somewhat reliably hold conversations without needing to use English and the likes.

Austria is even easier.
laughs in tirolerisch
No wonder they need to pray so much in the heilige Land… For a cure for their throat issues…
Shit just works. Feels a lot less bureaucratic than Germany. And more egalitarian.
Italian here, I would say Portugal. For some reason I just kind of felt at home there

I’m from Germany and I haven’t had the opportunity to travel a lot. So I feel like I don’t know enough about any other European country to make such a decision. Damn I couldn’t even say which is the nicest region to live in Germany.

But as an European a sure appreciate the opportunity to live and work in any EU country and to travel safely and without the need of a passport within the Schengen area. So that’s a good thing.

Definitely. I have some non-EU colleagues, they envy us a lot for that

Netherlands as a German

Each has its own merit. I really struggle not Picking my own. It’s central, big and decent.

I’ll go with Switzerland.

Scotland. Yes, that counts.
I really like Amsterdam, but for the weather I’d go with Malta.
As a Swede, Finland. Closely tied with Norway and Denmark… Obama giving medal to self.jpg
Netherlands as a UKain
As a northern german I have to say northern Italy. The nature, the food, mthe weather and the culture. I love it!
I haven’t traveled even nearly enough, but I’ve had a really good time in Spain, specifically Barcelona. Switzerland too.
It’s hard for me to say because I haven’t lived in another country other than my own for any amount of time. It’s funny though how all the answers are countries in the west :)) Send some love to the balkans please.

I noticed it too, maybe because the population of Lemmy is more Western-Europe based, and people usually travel to nearby countries?

Balkans-wise, Croatia and Greece are beautiful!

Because most of Lemmy instances are finnish, German etc. :P

Only a few people are using Lemmy from Balkans, Eastern Europe.

In [email protected] we are like… 10 Greeks??

Austria, as a Finn. The mountains, culture, and of course Schnitzel mit Stiegl!
I am german. I loved slovenia, albania and iceland for both, lovely people and amazing nature.
I love the Nordic countries but so far I’ve only visited Denmark and Sweden. I love the people, culture, food, nature there. So Finland, Iceland and Norway are definitely on my bucket list as well. I’m from The Netherlands.
I’d have to say America. I know it’s not European, and is my own country, but it’s by far the best country in the world. I mean, look at our beautiful red white and blue flag. I don’t think any country has ever used such beautiful colors.
I guess you missed the title of that thread
not just the title - common sense as well…
Buckle up boys, Reddit is leaking again…
Bad troll is troll. Bad this douche

I love many things about Bulgaria. The nature, the lively city centers and the overall vibes in the cities.

I’m from Germany and I truly wish our cities had some Bulgarian vibes.

We’re planning a trip soon, any hidden highlights?

@[email protected] My biggest tip is to take a look at 100 nto. It lists 100 interesting touristic objects all over Bulgaria. It leads you to many smaller but great places. Google maps has an slightly outdated overlay that shows these places. At most of them you can get a small Booklet. In it you can collect stamps from each visited place.

Some specific places that come to my mind are:

  • Veliko Tarnovo. It’s the former capital and has a big castle ruin. In the evening head to the Monument to the Assen Dynasty and enjoy the view of the city.
  • Smolyan and the area around it. The city has a great Regional History Museum and the area around the City is good for Hiking. Maybe take a Jeep ride up Eagles eye and visit the Yagodinska cave.
  • The Seven Rila Lakes in the Rila mountains. You can take a cable cart up and hike the rest. From there you can also hike to the Rila monastery.
  • The Devetashka Cave. It has these impressive arches. Good for pictures :)
  • Plovdiv. The historic city center and the student filled bars and cafes.
  • Burgas has not only a very nice beach but also the awesome Sea Garden. I would avoid the typical tourist beaches like the Golden Sands near Varna and the Sunny Beach near Nessebar. Instead opt for the central beach in Burgas where most locals go anyway.
  • Try to eat at a механа (Mehana) and order Food in a сач (Sach).
  • Drink some Boza.

Really, really appreciate it! Thanks 😎
I’m from switzerland and i adore finland!

German here. Probably Croatia? Balkans with heavy Roman influence is just a very solid combo. You get the good food that isn’t entirely meat (looking at you, Bosnia) but also the good booze. Also Adriatic sea, Roman ruins, landscape and the people are generally super nice.

I do find myself returning to Latvia every few years. Baltics seem all very chill.
