Is it possible to block an entire instance? - lemm.ee

I found out about Hexbear today, and I don’t want anything to do with any of their communities or anyone who chooses to be a part of it. What can I do to make sure I don’t need to ever remember that it exists?

outside of running your own instance, asking your instance’s owner to block them, or joining one that already has the offender on the blocklist, no. It’s requested a lot though so it’s probably on the todo list
It is if you're on kbin. Instructions here.
How to block an instance on a personal level? - /kbin meta - kbin.social

Hi guys, I apologise if this seems obvious but I can’t work it out. How do I defederate an instance I don’t want to see posts from in my feed, if the server is still permitted on my instance? I don’t want to block all federation, just from specific servers....

Damn, yet another cool thing kbin has that I didn't even know about.

I really hope more instances adopt this feature.

Thank you for this! So handy! (I'm not going to block anything yet, but it is great to know that I can!)
Currently no. Still needs to be implemented by Lemmy.
The PR for the necessary back-end changes is out for review on GitHub: github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/pull/3869
User can block instances (fixes #2397) by Nutomic · Pull Request #3869 · LemmyNet/lemmy

Analogous to the existing community block functionality, users can also block instances. This means that all content from communities which are hosted there is hidden. Posts from users of blocked i...

Oh that’s cool!
Oh hell yeah, thanks for sharing
Memmy has a broken implementation of instance filtering that currently needs to be configured on every startup, but it exists. Hopefully it will eventually be meaningfully functional. Precisely for the instance you mentioned.
instantly knew which one you were talking about just from the title
Pick a new instance or make one
You can just ignore it and not post anything to it, that’s what I do with the instances I don’t care for
Ok or… Hear me out- they could filter it like they want with the various apps that do that, instead of your suggestion that doesn’t help
What did you find out about hexbear?

I just looked, and I think it’d be more accurate to call it a Neo-Bolshevik cesspit.

(I don’t know what those words mean)

Not OP, but from what I can tell it's a Communist/Leftist instance heavy on the shitposting. Hard to tell what there is ironic and what isn't, but I guess if you really hate Tankies it wouldn't be your favorite instance.
Yeah, I noticed posts from it last night and looked around, it’s… Confusing, I don’t really understand their position even after reading their description.
Once you get to know us I think you’ll find we’re actually pretty cool
Try not being such a little panzy instead
This is about the best you can hope for from hexbear users.
Have a look at available lemmy clients. Sync for example has a filter feature to filter out either an instance, a community or user straight from a post.
I’m using Memmy and there’s an option in the settings to block a specific instance or an instance with key words.
If you’re on android, use sync and block instances you don’t like

You could go to an instance that blocks us, like Lemmy.world if you are that scared of communists.

Alternatively this third party app Pretty Private Browsing has instance blocking features I think, but I don’t care for the UI personally.

Final option I guess is to cry about it?

I mean you could try expanding your horizons a little bit and learning about other instances instead of being so scared of every opposing viewpoint on the internet. I promise you we aren’t anywhere near as bad as the libs across lemmy grumble about.

But like others have said there’s currently no built in lemmy way to do it. If you’re using uBlock Origin, you can go into the options (with the gears), go into the My filters tab, and add this line to the bottom:

lemm.ee##div.post-listing > div:nth-child(2) > article:nth-child(1) > div:nth-child(2) > div:nth-child(1) > div:nth-child(2) > div:nth-child(3) > a:nth-child(2) > span:has-text(@hexbear.net):upward(8)

It won’t exactly block it but it’ll filter out any Hexbear posts from your page when it loads so you don’t see them. You can replace the lemm.ee at the beginning with another instance and it should continue to work elsewhere, as long as there aren’t any major changes to the front end.

If you aren’t using uBlock then idk how you can even live like that.

quite a few subscribers on hexbear
I’m in the same boat 🥴
