Did you know that photography has been racially biased for pretty much its entire history?

Yes, you read that right. I was talking about this in an unlisted reply and realized many people may not know this

The Racial Bias Built Into Photography https://www.nytimes.com/2019/04/25/lens/sarah-lewis-racial-bias-photography.html

tl;dr: Camera/photography design has focused (lol) almost entirely on image clarity of their primary users and designers: white people

So yeah, cameras are racist, as silly as that sounds

The Racial Bias Built Into Photography

Sarah Lewis explores the relationship between racism and the camera.

The New York Times
@neatchee yes, every tech is biased towards who created it.
Also is it possible to stop boosting NYT's content? Never know when are they gonna do another op-ed by nazis again, they love to do that.

@sub_o No. When a valuable, well researched, thoughtful article is hosted by NYT, I'm going to share it. And when they post an op-ed from a neo-nazi I'm going to give them shit for it. NYT is not a monolith and op-eds are the least quality-controlled part of all journalism.

Ignoring good journalism because the massive organization doesn't meet your purity test is how you create an echo chamber. You trying to create the left-equivalent of Fox News? Because that's how you create the left-equivalent of Fox News.

And don't drop in my mentions with a distraction from a very important topic. That's a bad look.

@neatchee I dunno, every time when there's a right op-ed, the one who's gonna bear the brunt are the brown skin people like me.

But you're right, it's a bad look. I won't do that anymore.

@sub_o not the Jewish people like me, huh? I'm fully aware of the consequences of Nazi rhetoric, my dude

Thank you for at least admitting to the misstep

@neatchee no, no, i'm not insinuating that jewish people aren't targeted by these right wing op-ed at all.

I understand fully, but my concern came from trauma that we needed to flee my country every 4 - 5 years before election, and it's always those rhetorics. The anti-semitic rhetoric are also repurposed and used against us, we were called jews of the east, we were accused of having dual loyalties, people were butchered and raped.

My concern is not out of purity test, it's out of fear.

@sub_o I'm sorry you had to deal with that, and I would never tell you your fear is unreasonable. But projecting your fear onto others and asking them to accommodate your fear by, e.g., not posting links to anything from NYT even when those links are about racial equity, isn't okay. My point was that I'm aware of the consequences of dangerous rhetoric and chose to link the NYT article anyway because the benefits outweigh the risks in this case.

If NYT articles are triggering for you, even when the subject matter has nothing to do with your trauma, then I recommend adding a filter for the NYT domain
