Any good alternatives to the standard mid-term essay in the humanities & social sciences? I'm looking for something that (a) challenges students to develop a theme; (b) is creative enough to go beyond the question --> response model (i.e. might counter some of the AI traps); but (c) fits a big lecture module (ie provides useful formative assessment while being cognisant of the marking workload).

@kevinkosullivan @histodons @academicchatter My daughter's first year she took a class that was basically historical D&D. The major assignments they had were to write and deliver persuasive speeches in the character of whatever historical figure they were assigned. So, Athenian general arguing for the need to collect tithes or French revolutionary figure arguing for women's suffrage. I would think you could translate that for history or literature courses.

@AKK_1967 Interesting exercise. I'm not sure it would fit for the module I'm teaching but useful to ask students to think into someone else's life.
