Looking at buying a folding electric bike (I live up a hill in Bath, non-electric is not an option for me).

It's the expensive intersection on the venn-diagram, varying from "quite a lot of money" all the way up to "decent second hand car" territory, so I'm doing quite a bit of research.

The market is a bit of a mess of small firms and short lived startups, frankly dodgy looking imports, and a couple of established names who get to charge a premium.

Also, the price curve is very non-linear.

Cheap one with none of the things I'd like? - £900

One or two of the main features I want - £1k-1.5k

All the main features? That'll be £3.5-4.5k...

Also, the market seems to be very regional, so you read a review of a good one, but you can't buy it in the UK.

@Noneeeed what sort of features are you looking for?

@tomcartwrightuk Big hills round here, so decent power. crank or rear motor, reasonable number of gears. Disc breaks would be nice. Rear rack (a lot of the cheaper ones don’t appear to support a rack.

Currently looking at Tern, Dawes and Whisper ones.

Another problem is physical shops don’t seem to have much range (compared to normal bikes). I’d quite like to try them out.

@tomcartwrightuk they all seem to be about the same weight, and there’s not much difference in folded size, although the Terns are the winner on that, but only a few cm in each direction.

I have resorted to a spreadsheet…

@Noneeeed gah I completely missed your replies and missed the folding requirement in the first toot - that does make things harder.
@Noneeeed I was going to suggest a conversion kit but I am not sure they work as well with folded bikes (also the lead time for the one I got (swytch) was very long)
@tomcartwrightuk no probs. I went with the Tern in the end. Very happy with it. Does a good job with even our ridiculously steep hill. Need to get the hang of coordinating the level of assist and the gears. I like being able to do an up hill pull away at a junction in traffic.
