Devastating to see Lahaina burned to the ground. It was such a beautiful town. Can't imagine the sorrow of the people who live there. Global warming will mean watching this scene over-and-over. https://www.sfgate.com/hawaii/article/much-of-lahaina-maui-destroyed-wildfires-18287496.php
@danielnazer Pretty soon Miami and Manhattan and many other coastal cities will permanently be under seawater. And still we’ll hear the fossil fuel industry and the banks and politicians who protect them singing the praises of “American energy independence.”

Six people died so far. The Coast Guard rescued 14 people - 2 children - who had leapt into the ocean to escape the flames. About 26 more people were airlifted to local hospitals.

"Fires were rare in Hawaii & on other tropical islands before humans arrived, & native ecosystems evolved without them."

“It was apocalyptic from what they explained,” Lawrence said. “The heat. Smoke & flames everywhere. They had to get my elderly uncle out of the home.”

We need #ActUp for the planet.

I loved that Banyan tree. I hope it hasn't died. And peace for the families of those who perished.

But realize, in spite of all the wx and political crap going on in this country at this very moment, this is but a second out of a Ukrainians day. There are horrors beyond tragedy that occur in this world that we can help cure.

I single out the banyan tree because it had become a touchstone for people, something that seemed to promise to give us a lesson of life from the past, and would survive us, long after we were gone.

Until there is no one left to bear witness.
