Well, that's no surprise. That's been the Windows ideology since the internet was available.
They've always wanted a closed system, the cloud made it easier.

TBF, managing a single source of software is far easier than updating unique 500+million devices, but that comes at a cost to the users who just want a Happy Click to get things done.

Windows was never about users, it's just a profit loss/invite to Office subscribers.
