this is the kind of thinking that gave us names like āpcmasterraceā. words mean things, their origins matter

I am not as sure a rice desktop png is racist but if you feel like the term is opressing you or holding you back, could you consider opportunities to reclaim what is a good word (who doesnāt like rice?) and use it for positive cultural elements (modded desktops)? I donāt want to cede a good word to uninformed peoples from 40 yrs agoā¦history is too short to let them win!

Meta post Iāve decided to make. I enjoyed the unixporn subreddit a lot when I used reddit more. I enjoy customizing my linux de as much as the next nerd. But you definitely shouldnāt use racist slang to refer to the process. To be clear, I didnāt know the origin of the term āricingā until fairly recently. I was chattimg with my friend and used it to describe my de setup. They informed me that apparently itās from car customization, and is a pejorative against generally asian men who customize their car to look like a racecar. After learning this I was sad to realize just how engrained it is in linux de customization culture. I personally have stopped using the term, and I would ask everyone here stop as well.
