What is the best email to use that has no affiliation with Google, Microsoft, or any corporation that is working to turn us into a HAL-controlled society with robocops and pre-crime arrests? Assume I know nothing and would prefer easiest to maneuver as well. Actually, just go ahead and assume that it’s 1997, and I’m your 75-yo grandma who knows how to “dial onto the World Wide Web” but calls you 5 times a day about how to use internet explorer to search for whitewater and Vince Foster MURDERED, etc

SO, in summary: email that is not evil and has simplest design layout— (or at least somewhat simple to set up initially, like the way mastodon made it easy to pick an instance and set up one night when I was completely wasted, start posting/reposting, then figure out the rest later.)

@JoParkerBear i use protonmail and am happy
@kamstrup Seconded here. The web interface is good, and with even the cheapest subscription you get the mail bridge to allow an independent client to connect (as well as getting the full suite of private, secure services).
