I've been on holiday with my family over the past week, and so have stayed off most social media during that time. But of course I watched the whole X drama unfold and it made me even more sad than I was before about Twitter's demise. I haven't yet been brave enough to delete my entire a/c, like @andypiper and others have. But Andy's post sure resonates...who else here has deleted their "X" a/c? https://andypiper.co.uk/2023/07/31/goodbye-to-my-life-on-twitter-2007-2023/
Goodbye to my life on Twitter, 2007-2023

A eulogy to my life as shared via my main Twitter account, before X: 2007-2023.

The lost outpost
@ricmac @andypiper something people often forget about this whole thing, it could happen to facebook too. It could happen to tumbler, linkedin, the rest of the facebook owned networks, reddit...in short, everything which is owned by a single entity. And so the enshitification continues, till either the internet is only bearable to most people and we open our browsers with dread, the corporations realise that enough is enough, or the fedi outgrows them. Either way, don't forget to be people.
15 Years of Twitter

Today marks 15 years since I signed up for Twitter according to a notification they pushed to me. It seemed like the perfect time to delete my account, partly so that I am in no way supporing what is becoming more and more a toxic environment, partly to stop me casually checking in and getting depressed or enraged by the posts their algorithm suggest to me, and partly to stop friends from sending me DMs which I am usually slow to respond to because I was not checking things regularly. As I posted on Mastodon, it was a sad and hard decision because over the years Twitter has given me so much laughter, friendship, and jobs and it has also helped me learn so much about myself, the world and the technologies that are part of my work life. Maybe Facebook will be next…

@ricmac @andypiper couldnt delete my X because i deleted my Twitter last november
@ricmac @andypiper I did - 15+ years on that account.
@ricmac @andypiper 12 years and 7k followers and I signed out. I didn't delete but I also don't have the tfa key that twitter made me put on account and didn't remove when I resigned. Do it, be gone with that place
