and when the movie is just about these girls spending time with other, it unleashes a full salvo of romcom sweetness that rivals anything Star Cinema has put together in the last twenty years.

A ★★★½ review of Rookie (2023)

It's pretty notable for what's absent. There isn't any ridicule from their teammates about being together. There isn't a disapproving parent. There isn't even any real hesitation between the two girls, who realize reasonably quickly what they're feeling and act on it. There is a nun who at point chides one of the characters for how she's dressed, but for the most part, it really isn't an issue at all that these girls fall in love with each other. To go further, there's an implication that this is all very common, and it's absolutely nothing to get worked up about.

So, shoujo-ai without it being explicitly shoujo-ai?

Sam Lee just understands the rhythm of romance, and will let characters sit quietly with all the tension in the air between them, leaving a pause so that audiences can scream their heart out over how much they want these two to kiss already.

I’m willing to bet there’s already a yuri/shoujo-ai fanfic of it out there. Perhaps even a doujin.
