Thousands of people have gathered in the main stadium in #Niamey , the capital of #Niger , in support of the recent military #coup . An imminent deadline is approaching for the military junta to step down. There were cheers from the crowd as a delegation of members of the ruling council ( #CNSP ) arrived at the stadium. (cont.)

Last Sunday the West African regional bloc #ECOWAS gave the coup leaders a week to reinstate the ousted president of #Niger , Mohamed #Bazoum . The organisation threatened military intervention if its demands were not met. But some African countries have expressed strong opposition to this.
