Institutions like the New York Times have an intense desire to be seen as neutral and rational in the eyes of people who at this point have no respect for them-- and this desire is so important that any harm that might come from legitimizing people who have eliminationist ideas just isn't as important.

It's a kind of affirmative action for conservative ideas only practiced by centrist liberals.

Can you imagine centrist conservatives ever even having such a concern?

i thought about those transphobes who claim they don't have a problem with gays, or those folks pushing for racist policies under the guise of formal equality, but that's just lip service and outright lying and trojan horsing not the actual substantive concessions the liberals so liberally (sorry) hand out

i guess there are some generally-conservative Christians who still take the help the poor stuff seriously and want to try to advocate for better policies to mitigate poverty, but those are vanishingly few and their voices necessarily timid, and most of even those are silenced and absorbed by ideas about private charity being what really matters and everything else being tainted by state violence
