@chopaganda and we have gifs and an edit button
@chopaganda can you believe hashtags aren't even a thing on Bluesky?

@chris Watching who gravitates to BS vs here has shown me a few things:

- For some, a pleasant and familiar UI is far more important than any level of functionality/benefit from something less familiar (be it from the comfort that comes from familiarity, not wanting to put effort in, or intimidation from doing something new)

- Many people just want to yell into the void with familiar faces and care much less about content

Nothing wrong with either. Just interesting to observe.

@chopaganda yes, without being too judgemental, I agree that it is interesting to observe the different types of people the two platforms attract. It's also funny to me that Bluesky can be abbreviated as BS.
@chopaganda that said, anything that pulls some people away from using Twitter/X is a good thing imo.
@chris Totally agree. I have nothing against BS despite it seeming like a bad idea to follow Jack Dorsey to a second location, and I will likely use it a ton. My feed is just so terrible there right now. Combined with the lack of functionality, and I’m not seeing much use at the moment besides saying hi to folks.
@chopaganda I do miss a handful of people from Twitter and it's nice to keep in touch with them on BS, but that's about it. The functionality is pretty bad, but hopefully that will get better.
@chopaganda another thing I noticed that I really don't like about BS is that you can't turn off people's reposts. It's awful.
@chris @chopaganda In general that’s not too bad but when someone goes on a repost spree it’s very annoying.
@nikres @chopaganda I generally turn off reposts whenever I follow anyone, so I find it super annoying
@chris @chopaganda I leave them on until someone gets annoying with it, then I turn them off. Generally I don’t mind some, I’ve found some good stuff that way.
@nikres @chopaganda I like to keep the timeline clean
@chris @chopaganda Hence the toot and deloot?
@nikres @chopaganda that's part of it I guess
@chris @chopaganda butting in to say, it’s a race. Whoever has DMs first, wins. 🤷🏻‍♂️
@DreamingDreams @chopaganda Mastodon already has all the things, but I doubt there will really be a clear winner. I see the future of social media being more fragmented.
@chopaganda @chris It seems to be that BS is drawing people in for whom political posting was a big part of their identity. Not to say there aren't people who care very much about politics on Mastodon, but it seems to be harder to chase clout here that way (maybe due to the lack of quote-toots?). So the volume of political posting stays lower and people are instead just sharing things they like and having conversations.
@mielcarz @chopaganda I also love how the different instances on here have their own personalities
@mielcarz @chris I’m not seeing that on my end. I’m seeing it drawing in a ton of high-volume, low-thought, nonsense/stream of conscious posters. Nothing wrong with that, obviously. Just an observation.
@chopaganda @chris I mean, I intentionally followed a lot of those amateur pundit type guys so maybe it’s a me problem.
@mielcarz @chris And on my side, most of my feed is Phish fan follow backs so it could be on me too.
