the number of ppl perhaps rightly mourning the decay of academic twitter as one of the only ways to share, find and talk about research seems like it points directly to the fundamental hollowness of the current journal system as a means of uh sharing, finding, and talking about research.

our for-profit system of communication is so hostile to the way we want to work that we became dependent on a different, also very hostile informational chokepoint.

I think it is a pretty normal idea to want to try to rebuild our communication systems ourselves, in common. whatever that looks like. I get why that's weird or boring or scary to ppl I just think it would be fun and good to do.

(mostly bc I think it could be useful to some of the other ppl who also need to be able to organize and access information and don't have public funding to make stuff to do that. but, it could be cool to make our incentive systems not like make our working conditions way worse than they need to be. too.)
@jonny I think it is also a criticism of academic conferences as well
@jonny not to mention your open academic journal/platform could double as a fediverse instance
@jonny This is an excellent point I hadn't considered before. Journals started as a faster way to communicate science than books, often were records from scientific meetings with discussion. Peer review remains important, but social media was a way to have fast discussions and now it's broken. I'm betting on mastodon (but worry) but having researchers take back lead on sharing makes a ton of sense
@omearabrian
masto is just a start! we can build systems off of it that serve our needs, but only if we believe we can!!
@jonny I think a disciplinary instance is a great idea, especially now, with Twitter no longer sucking up all the attention. If the scientific societies had any sense, they'd have stood one up already.
@williamgunn
yes, and since they didn't, we're here ready to make a new kind of society ❤️
@jonny I've seen some disciplinary instances already. Good luck with yours!
@williamgunn @jonny At this point I think @ACM deserves to be mentioned for being on top of this and creating their own instance early on!
@jonny just wondering if goodold #listserv is a social medium #themediumisthemessage
