Somebody do a case-study, fast. This is how it should be done.

This problem is left to public instances which have the resources to do the job. 3) Another #PrivateInstance benefit is that the #LocalTimeline (https://social.bbc/public/local) and #FederatedTimeline (https://social.bbc/public) become chronological content feeds under their control. #BBC #PrivateInstance #BBCRD 2/3
BBC R&D's @cubicgarden has been on here quite a while, I wonder if he is involved in this :)
@cubicgarden that is so good to see.
I remember meeting you at MozFest, years ago, and then finding you on fedi — and thinking to myself "oh something interesting is going to come from this!"
Now it has.
@tiz @rysiek @BBCRD the BBC is institutionally transphobic, yes. Don't think "streak" is the appropriate word, though. That implies it's limited in time. The BBC just generally has a culture of transphobia.
As far as I can tell, that transphobia hasn't manifested on the BBC Mastodon instance, but it seems like that's just a matter of time.
@jozeldenrust as somebody else pointed out, people who set up that instance are not the people making editorial decisions.
That is *not* to say that anyone who feels uncomfortable with BBC having an instance on fedi should not block them if they so choose!
But I think there is value in making that distinction in discussions about this. There are some wonderful, thoughtful people involved in this, some had been part of fedi for *years*.
@rysiek @tiz @BBCRD definitely, I think most instances shouldn't deferate from the BBC instance.
Instances that specifically present themselves as places where people are sheltered from the ambient transphobia in society have a pretty good argument for defederation, but general purpose instances should probably federate with the BBC instance.
Safe spaces are useful, but if you want to spend your entire life in a safe space, you're basically just giving up on society in general.
@rysiek There are probably many people at the BBC who are generally in favour of protecting trans rights, and many more who are unintentional transphobes. There's structural transphobia within the institution, but that only requires a small number of malicious transphobes.
The Mastodon team at the BBC skews less transphobic than the organization as a whole, which may well mean that they're all pro trans rights, but they'll have to operate within a structurally transphobic organization.
