Gosh, this is massive - unbeknownst to me the #BBC appears to have developed some presence on #mastodon - here are the first few accts I have come across:

@fulelo There's a blog post by @BBCRD about their arrival on Mastodon here: https://www.bbc.co.uk/rd/blog/2023-07-mastodon-distributed-decentralised-fediverse-activitypub It includes a list of other BBC accounts (hopefully more to come soon!)
The BBC on Mastodon: experimenting with distributed and decentralised social media

Trialling ActivityPub and the federated model for social media and it's possibilities for the BBC.

BBC R&D

@semiprime @fulelo @BBCRD it's a really excellent blog post by #BBC. Shows a lot of thought has gone into how this is going to be run (and hopefully evaluated).

If this works, it could really be a template for how other organisations use federated social media as a distribution platform. I think quite a lot riding on this for the whole #Fediverse!

@gpollara @semiprime @BBCRD hope it will take off somehow, fingers crossed 🤞

@fulelo @semiprime @BBCRD me too - out of interest, even tho v v early days, striking how many thousand followers they've already accrued. The audience here is not Threads / Twitter scale, but stil not nothing either.

I'm personally curious if these BBC accounts will interact with the public, with replies mostly (like you do). I.e will it be information distribution only, or also community building / conversation.

I could be thinking it wrong tho - maybe will be like comments on a webpage.

@gpollara @semiprime @BBCRD not sure and tbh i doubt unfortunately that they would have thhe capacity to (wo)man the station and stand by... but let us hope and see - i think the audience here is quite phenomenal. But again, depending what their strategy will be....
@semiprime @BBCRD yes thanks, was ululating while posting about it. At last.

Excellent: “This is an experiment - we will run it for 6 months and then decide whether and how to continue.
We aim to learn how much value it has provided and how much work and cost is involved.”
