Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal - Transporter

@ZachWeinersmith
"I can't believe he did it! We're going to get in so much trouble."

@ZachWeinersmith

This was actually a major plot point in _Spock Must Die!_, the first ever original novel based on Star Trek.

@ZachWeinersmith It felt a bit suspicious when the transporter operator laughed and said that he wouldn't caught dead using a transporter when I asked them about it.
@ZachWeinersmith Bald characters are quite popular on Star Trek so this tracks.
@ZachWeinersmith "Actually, the soul is burst into plasma and replaced by a replica, too."
@ZachWeinersmith the fact that more characters in Star Trek aren't seriously freaked out by transporters is, frankly, the least realistic part of the franchise.

@MissHap @ZachWeinersmith

💯 That's what makes the Trek 'verse so ghastly. I'll take the post-scarcity socialist utopia part, though.

@raineyday @ZachWeinersmith Post scarcity economy and molecular level 3D printers are both laughably plausible (and desirable!) by comparison.
@ZachWeinersmith this is why I like the 40k style of teleportation where your entire you is just popping into another dimension for a sec to pop out where you want in real space
@ZachWeinersmith Reminds me of a scenario I dreamt up awhile back: say that aliens ask/offer to make a perfect copy of you, which they'll take with them to live in their utopia. You yourself continue your regular life on Earth. Do you take the offer?
@byobattleship @ZachWeinersmith i mean, sure, assuming their offer is honest.
In the worst case, it's just the same as it would have been, and in the best you get to live in an alien utopia.
The only possible downside is to get frustrated and envious of your copy, but I guess that can be controlled, or you can at least fool yourself into convincing it was all a dream.

@ZachWeinersmith

I always imagine transporting as like in the movie The Prestige. The transporter is actually a replicator for people, and the old body has to be killed so the new body can take its place.

@JGR0 @ZachWeinersmith then the ghost of your previous self starts haunting your new self
@ZachWeinersmith Um, no, I’ll take a shuttle, thanks. If atmospheric conditions are bad enough that flying down in a shuttle is not advisable, then I’m staying in the starship, thankyouverymuch.
@forkedcancel, this ties in nicely with our recent conversation about #consciousness and #dualism.
@ZachWeinersmith I've realized for a while that Star Trek is a sneaky dystopia, but it had never occurred to me before that some Starfleet engineers must realize this too.
