I mean I'm not sure the FSF wants anyone to take them seriously anymore. Given what they stand for, giving a cease and desist order without any communication to a FOSS project seems very hypocritical.
@enthusiast101 technically, a cease and desist letter is a communication. It is not an action involving the legal system or anything.
you send a cease and desist out of courtesy sometimes or as a threat, but the "without any communication" case is when you sue them and serve them.
@enthusiast101 I mean it is definitely an aggressive thing, and not a nice gesture, because if done correctly, a cease and desist is going to be used in a lawsuit as "we told them clearly that they shouldn't do it and they did it nevertheless". And in most cases, people do threaten with a lawsuit (which the GNU boot folks didn't do).
I'm not saying, they couldn't have been nicer, but they definitely didn't go the nuclear option 😂
