I think so far the most disheartening thing about Fedi/Mastodon is that I see people not want to join due to ongoing elitism.

Don't give people flack for staying on Twitter or moving to BSky, they're not our enemies.

It's fair if you disagree with those platforms and how they're run, but don't take it out on the users. They have their reasons, and being insulted for not being on Fedi/Mastodon is one of them.

Given recent circumstances, yes, staying on Twitter is an incredibly dangerous game, but not stupidity.
There's many factors that weigh into that decision, from time to convenience to reach, all of them are valid in one way or another, maybe not to you, but it's still real.

tldr;
Don't make it "Us vs Them", there is no "Them"

Be inviting to those not on Fedi/Mastodon, don't try to insult them into joining

And I also understand the frustration of BSky with it being invite-only. It feels awful to be left out.

But the fact it's invite-only isn't the fault of the users, the software IS in early Beta stages, they can't just dump an unregulated amount of users on it and "see how it goes". This might've been different if Twitter wasn't in such a controversial state, but atm they'd have to expect a ridiculous amount of users if they opened the floodgates.

AT Proto is meant to federate in the future, I don't see a reason there can't be a bridge between here and there, both of them are open source and would result in the best of both worlds.

@Oric been saying for ages that a bridge would solve most issues but realistically probably not gonna happen
@Oric most people have moved to bsky from what ive seen, some here, and a minority to threads

@gray Threads has Facebook attached, so for many that's already a killer (also no NSFW lol)

As for an AT<->ActivityPub bridge...
Yeah, there won't be a global one, too many posts on either side, but I could see a couple furry bridges popping up.

@Oric but what if a threads user boosts something nsfw then what

and ye maybe, just wish bluesky used activitypub or adapted AT to somehow be compatible

@gray I feel like Facebook will just hide anything that has a CW lol

@Oric "cw: mh"

Your Thread has been removed from Threads.

@gray @Oric maybe THAT'S why a certain crowd thinks CWs are a plot to get them

because that WOULD happen on corporate social media even though it's not at all what it's about here

@IceWolf @gray Yes, coming from Twitter, having your posts marked sensitive harms reach, that is ingrained in peoples brains

It's not the case here, but still might be expected

@gray If they don't want to make a big moderation effort and also allow federation, that's how it'll end up

@Oric @gray Maybe mastodon could one day speak both protocols, which would enable posts from there to be shared around here.

Though it is inherently limited, bluesky is a lot less flexible from what I've seen, which makes it unappealing as a whole for me.

@awooo @Oric didn't even consider that, but it seems very unlikely tbh
@Oric I also feel like people could stand to cool it with the tutorializing. Make yourself available to help when people need it, but the fact that every time people join Mastodon they get blasted with "make sure you do stuff this way, don't do this, don't do that." It's gotta be a bit annoying. โ€‹
@Rusty For sure, some basic etiquette like CWs maybe, but don't give people a full handbook of instructions
@Oric itโ€™s one of the reasons Iโ€™m working on bridging the gap starting with my cross poster but then going from there to hopefully build a proper bridge once I gain better understanding of how to build better interoperability between the two.
@Oric if you posted this over on bsky id totally reskeet it

@Oric Yup. And it doesn't help that even trying to explain it to people who are on the bigger, one click social spaces feels like trying to explain switching to Linux to the average Mac or Windows user. There is too much ground to cover at once!

It takes more digging to find the right place to be and that means a fair bit of hand-holding we need to be willing to do to bring people over. That adds up to us not having the room to be elitists.
