Silicon Valley wants us to believe ChatGPT and other AI tools will usher in a wonderful tech utopia (unless it destroys the human species).

But those narratives distract us from the truth that generative AI isn’t about making the world a better place. Its goal is to enrich investors and reduce the power of everyone else, and we need to recognize that before it’s too late.

The ChatGPT revolution is another tech fantasy

Generative AI will enrich investors and be deployed against everyone else

@parismarx but... but the blockhain crypto AI self-driving machine learning was supposed to make us all rich and happy!
@parismarx really though, that’s with any tech advancement. The positive spin is “it’ll save you so much time.” But that’s not the reality. The reality is we keep raising the expectation of production, and never give back the time we supposedly “saved.” They take those time savings and convert them to money for the ones who directed the production rather than those who produced.

@parismarx

Its just another pump and dump scam like *coin.

@parismarx They have no way of determining that at this juncture. It's touted that way to soften its potential downward pressure on labor. They may find that Chat AI is a disaster or may have copyright problems. In any event, they will try to drive down the cost of labor.

@parismarx

But when this is just used for 'fraud' and pumping up mMAU numbers for 10k filings and is revealed as such where will we be after the court cases as a society? 🤔

@parismarx The value of AI is that it (as a rented service) extracts value from any digital (intellectual) property for its owners. The users of AI are part of the labour to unearth even more digital properties and, with those efforts, expose themselves as another property to extract value.
@parismarx don’t fall for the Ai doomerism attention whoring. It has been folded into their marketing strategy.
@parismarx Interesting parallels with past tech hypes! The rise and fall of crypto, the metaverse, and now generative AI, history certainly has its way of repeating. The real question is: what lessons are we learning along the way? 📚 #HistoryRepeats #AI
@parismarx The internet itself is basically an airport that has infinite hari krishnas and no airplanes. Neil Postman was right about all of this stuff 30 years ago. Generative AI is just another advertising campaign trying to make the equivalent of touching a hot stove "innovative" and "sexy". Fuck tech, fuck the "oh but this would be so neat" scientists, fuck the billionaires, all hail King Ludd.
@parismarx this will benefit just who can afford A100 GPU or who produce them. Luckily opens source alternatives are growing
@parismarx I kind of wonder, what will rich people do when they have absolutely ALL the money?

@cranky_tapir hey Pat, as you're fresh in from a fallen over grave marker marking a big bird carcass, first up, GOOD TO SEE YOU HERE!

Now, have you already been able to find your footing here? For instance, have you already found that you can follow hashtags in your main feed? And for interesting suggestions on following, @FediFollows suggests daily follows in specific interests.

@ErikBB Cheers Erik! Always good to hear from you 😄 I did not know about the hashtags! That's really useful for putting together a feed of stuff I actually want to see! I'm going to dive into that!

I've mostly been treating it like the dead bird, but I'm starting to get a feel for some of the differences. How long have you been here? Are you enjoying it?

@cranky_tapir

Just after Elmo announced he'd be buying/trashing the platform, I made this account. Really liked the idea of mastodon, as it's a decentralised 0 billionaire space, but I was aware I couldn't just expect a 100% switch right off the bat. So I have been working to find the nice people here while still actively using Twatter from the start.

Enjoying it a lot. The vibe is infinitely better, I don't get rage buildup while scrolling, and NO ADS

@cranky_tapir by the way, some of the older guard can be nitpicky and belligerent about how you're supposed to be on this platform. Ignore them 😂

@parismarx

Why don't they just get all the AI's to chat with each other and then I can stay home and continue to read my books in peace and quiet.
