Just saw a toot here about the Roman phrase "Panem et Circensis" ("Bread and Spectacles"), said to be all that was needed to keep the people happy with the government.

It was more than a metaphor, because two major functions of the gov then were the distribution of free or subsidized bread to the citizens, and the production of public spectacles.

Maybe that could be a platform for the Dems? Literally free bread and free entertainment for everyone?
