@neil @waltertross @suetanvil I’d also say general poorer performance and resource usage are key factors. Most users just want something that works and works well. Chromium-based browsers have Firefox well beaten for resource usage (especially Edge) and for overall speed. Firefox “feels” just a little clunky around the edges and (not saying this is right) that is enough to put many off.
My own take on this is that browsers have expanded into (intrinsically inefficient) application runtimes with no real way to make a distinction between "client app" and "just a document".
Both of these have value, but it leads to installing a Linux-kernel-sized application each time you want to read a 300-word article.
(IMO, we need a Web Without Scripting to go with the existing web.)
