Alright so, I know most of us in the fandom are seeing a lot of people push for BlueSky over Mastodon but there's one big thing to remember.

#BlueSky is not open, you cannot see posts publicly.

So, what does this mean? It means organizations and #furry #conventions can't use it for sending out updates to all, so it's not immediately viable for them.

You want to get more in the fandom using Mastodon? Follow the furry conventions and organizations set up on here that have already set up accounts and show them you want to use this platform, most cons have an account on https://furrycon.social, otherwise we could see a siphon once BlueSky opens up from lack of use and support on here. (Boosting this would also be nice)

If you're going/planning to go to #MFF? Follow @FurFest

#BLFC? @blfc is their official.

Did you just get back from #Anthrocon? They're over at @anthrocon.

@Neybulot I need to retract my earlier statement. Our Public Relations Director let me know that they did in fact create @FurFest as a potential backup if needed. I apologize for the confusion and I especially apologize to the admins of furrycon.social for any suggestion of misrepresentation or ill intent. They're providing a great service, and it is much appreciated.
I recommend keeping an eye on @furthemore too!!

@Neybulot

Speaking of which:

#scotiacon is currently holding a poll on their Telegram channel about which platforms they should expand to and 'Mastodon' is an option on there:

@Neybulot Additionally, BlueSky is a commercial platform ran with a profit incentive, they're not your friends.

Your local friendly mastodon instance (or even your own!) does NOT run with a profit incentive, or is entirely in your own control.

I don't understand why companies, artists and even users are so ok with being entirely reliant on a commercial party that will never have their best interests in mind

@Neybulot Gotta love how many of those accounts haven't been touched since 2022...
@Neybulot BlueSky -will- be open though. Eventually. Probably.
@Neybulot The protocol bluesky uses (AT) makes all public posts available externally via the api... but their proprietary web and android apps gate the api implementation behind a login.
This means it's possible to view public posts without an account BUT you'd need to write your own application or endpoint to fetch the post data, or use a third party one that can read the api for the post you want. A few of these exist but I've not seen any full implementations yet (just ones that like, grab all posts as they come in and show it like a big feed)

@dev That still makes it generally unusable for the average user that just wants to get updates from news orgs and what not without an account, which is more the point I was trying to make.

Right now you can open up...Let's say The Weather Channel's Twitter account by just going to the URL. It's branded, it's obvious. People aren't going to inherently trust a third-party site for redirection anyway. Even the fx/vx preview links used for fixing embeds I've only seen be used in tech circles.

@Neybulot I agree completely! Though that's likely only temporary atm since they're invite only right now... there's other weird stuff going on on top of that though that makes me not want to use them yet myself (see my recent posts).
@Neybulot @dev that's no longer true of Twitter, since this month you can't see shit without an account.
