@mitchellerj The advantage of the #Fediverse is that there is no big corporation in the background that will collect your data to sell it to advertisers (or "improve their service" as it's often named).
However, larger corporations might also have more resources to implement security measures. I think that one has to understand that the #Fediverse is run by volunteers on community servers, and everything you post in the internet will stay there forever. If you're fine with that - enjoy!
